GCFD Reception Renovation

Greater Chicago Food Depository

The environmental branding for the addition to the Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD) was designed to blend seamlessly with the architecture and existing branding, as well as pay tribute to all the different people and groups who make their mission to end hunger in the Chicagoland area possible.

Project Highlights

  • A donor wall features a custom wallcovering of 800,000 dots in GCFD brand colors that celebrates the impact of each donor

  • A mirrored wallcovering invites viewers to see themselves as a potential part of the donor network, while a viewing window into the kitchen showcases donations at work

Visitors are greeted by branded welcome signage and digital displays that highlight GCFD’s impact on the community. In the space that connects the addition, the branding starts to tell the story of the people who make this impactful work possible, creating a cohesive feel with the existing facility.

A founder wall brings to life the story of the six original community leaders through inspiring portraits by local artist Chantala Kommanivanh, giving a face to the group who brought their vision for GCFD to life.

The mural seamlessly transitions to a donor wall that is a colorful representation of the people that enable the founder’s work to continue. Small dots represent each donor and overlaid dimensional circular plaques highlight major contributors.

This design remains adaptable, ensuring it evolves with ongoing generosity. Circular forms repeat in the existing branding throughout the facility, including the a dotted band of distraction film.

The adjacent corridor features tone-on-tone reflective wallcovering made up of the 800,000 individual donor names. Oversized produce photography at the end of the corridor is also overlaid with reflective donor names, and ties in previous photography usage in branding.

Branding continues in food prep and warehouse areas, featuring impactful photography on cleanable material, highlighting the diverse communities served and connecting workers and volunteers to the sources of the food they handle.
